Council jubilee plans

The total amount allocated for the celebrations amount to under £28,000 and not as originally forecast £50,000.

“There are lots of things happening on that weekend most of which are free,” commented the Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Alan Carson, “so stay at home that weekend and help us Celebrate in Craigavon. We hope that as many people as possible will come and join in with the celebrations.”

The fun kicks off Friday, June 1, with a free Peter Corry concert in Lurgan Park. With all the favourites from the shows, Peter will also be singing new songs. Organised by the Lurgan Show Committee don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to see one of NI’s premier singers in this fantastic venue. To round off the evening the Council is hosting an awe inspiring fireworks extravaganza - so even more reason to mark Friday 1st in your diary. The fun starts in the Park at 7pm with the fireworks display at approximately 10pm.

Followed on Saturday, June 2, Lurgan Show is inviting everyone to come and help it celebrate its 100th anniversary. Starting back in 1912, Lurgan Show has grown from strength to strength now offering a fantastic array of activities and events to suit all the family.

On Sunday, June 3, the Council will host a Jubilee Thanksgiving Service in the Civic Centre at 8.15pm where the public will have an opportunity to give thanks for the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

Monday the fun moves to Portadown with the 1950s Big Dance and Tea Party on the Plaza with the ever popular compere George Jones introducing Swingabella. Again the entertainment is free so make sure to be in Portadown in good time. Entertainment starts from 12 to 3.00pm.

In line with the rest of the UK, the beacon on the edge of Craigavon Lakes will be lit on Monday, June 4, evening.

Tuesday, June 5, Sports Comes to Portadown takes place from 1pm onwards. With football in Portadown Football Club, a range of sports in Portadown’s People’s Park, tennis in Edenvilla Park, rugby at the rugby club and a fishing competition along the River Bann.

Sports Comes to Town makes way for the finale event – the Olympic Torch coming to Craigavon. Arriving at Portadown from 4pm, the torch will be proudly carried and displayed throughout the main streets of Portadown. The Olympic Torch relay will shine a spotlight on the people and places of Craigavon and demonstrate that the Olympic Spirit is alive and well in the area.
