Council lights up buildings to highlightEpilepsy

Civic buildings across the Borough are being illuminated in special colours on Saturday, March 26 for the Global Day of Epilepsy Awareness.

Councillors agreed to light Larne’s Smiley Buildings, The Braid, Ballymena and Carrickfergus Castle (courtesy of NIEA) in the colour purple. This is to mark ‘Purple Day’ which highlights that around 20,000 people in Northern Ireland are affected by epilepsy.

This follows on from the same three buildings being illuminated in the colours blue and yellow last Monday night to represent Global Awareness Day for Down syndrome

Councillor Billy Ashe, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough said: “We are delighted to undertake these special illuminations on behalf of the two worthy causes, Down syndrome and Epilepsy so as to show our support for both sufferers and for those working within the respective charities to help deal with the impact of these conditions.”

Clare Watson, Epilepsy Action Northern Ireland Manager said: “It has been fantastic to work with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to turn these buildings purple.

“Traditionally the colour of the lavender flower represents loneliness, with Purple Day designed as a reminder that no one has to live with epilepsy alone.”
