Council offers support to would-be retailers

The Bricks & Clicks Retail Start Up programme will enable local people to set up a shop, be an online trader or sell through fairs and markets.

Welcoming the new programme, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr John Scott said: “The council is delighted to offer such a fantastic programme of support.

“Participants will get free workshops, one-to-one mentoring and a business bursary of up to £500 to help them launch their new retail business.

“The programme is inspiring, practical, and past participants have found it very worthwhile.”

Teresa Murray is a past participant and she opened her new coffee shop ‘Linen and Latte’ last year. Glengormley has welcomed the new venture, with its mix of beautiful interiors, delicious treats and gifts to purchase.

Teresa commented: “It’s great to be able to start a business in your own area, and make it work. I thoroughly enjoy meeting local people coming into the shop, and particularly appreciate the lovely comments about our coffee shop and interiors.

“It’s lovely to hear that local people want to support your business. The Bricks and Clicks programme was very practical. I got really useful advice and a business plan which I find helpful. Starting a new business is challenging and the support I got was professional and very welcome. The bursary was a great boost too. I’d urge anyone thinking of starting a retail business to apply.”
