Council opposed to hospital staff parking charges

MOYLE District Council has agreed to write a letter to The Northern Health Trust stating their unequivocal opposition to the introduction of staff parking charges at both The Causeway and Antrim Area Hospitals.

The matter was raised at a council meeting by Glens Sinn Fein Councillor Colum Thompson and speaking after the meeting Councillor Thompson said: “I have been contacted by several members of staff from both hospitals about the issue and I am totally disgusted, the imposition of parking charges on patients who attend the hospitals on a regular basis was a step too far but to propose to subject staff at the hospitals to parking charges in totally and utterly unacceptable.

“It is a blatant attack on working people and in particular medical staff who do a superb job under extremely difficult circumstances. Many members of staff on lower pay grades are already struggling in the current financial climate, with the cost of heating, fuel and every day groceries sky rocketing without working class people and families also being subjected to parking charges.

“In effect it is charging people to go to work. It is high time the Northern Trust recognised the brilliant contribution which our health staff make and dropped this insidious and abhorrent proposal,” said Cllr Thompson.
