Council points to low figures for dog attacks

CRAIGAVON Borough Council has received less than 13 complaints regarding dog attacks over the past six months.

Some of the complaints included dog on dog attacks which Council’s Environmental Health Department cannot investigate as there is no legislation in place to follow.

A spokesperson for the Council said: “Over 5,100 dogs are licensed throughout the Borough and most dog owners keep their pets under proper control, proof in itself that Craigavon’s dog owners are responsible.

Craigavon Borough Council actively promote responsible dog ownership throughout the Borough and aim to teach residents the skills they need to care for their dogs and what it means to be a responsible dog owner.”

The spokesperson added: “As part of the Council’s campaign to educate dog owners, staff regularly host Dog Awareness Days. These sessions deal with a number of issues including keeping dogs under control and dog fouling. The Council also works in partnership with the Dogs Trust to deliver responsible dog owner shows in nine different schools throughout the area.”

Audrey McClune, Head of Environmental Health at Craigavon Borough Council, said: “Council provide a comprehensive Dog Control Service, ranging from dog licensing to investigating complaints about dog fouling, stray and unwanted dogs and alleged attacks by dogs on people or livestock. Council also issues advice and delivers an education programme for primary school children on responsible dog ownership.”

She added: “It is the responsibility of dog owners to keep their dogs under proper control and be effectively restrained from causing annoyance to anyone. Dog owners should take appropriate action if their dog is displaying threatening behaviour.”
