Council ready to proceed with Rugby Avenue

Proposals for the Rugby Avenue site include a 6,000 seater stadium and a leisure centre with toddler pools and splash pools.

Outside, 4G football and five-a-side pitches will be built alongside a hockey area and other grass pitches for multi sports use.

This week, Coleraine Borough Council have placed an advertisement to initiate the procurement process, that will be guiding and supporting the potential implementation of phase one of the Rugby Avenue Development, which Council aims to deliver before June 2014.

In a statement to Times Sport, David Jackson’s Council’s Head of Central Services said: “Council are embarking on this process subject to securing funding, securing the lease, and gaining full statutory transition committee approval to proceed with the work.”

The first works to be carried out on the site, subject to funding and approval, will be for two synthetic pitches.

The development will be the first public-private leisure enterprise in the area. Earlier this year, officials from Waveney District Council were in Coleraine on a two-day visit to view the Rugby Avenue site and view plans for the £43 million development. A working group, including Coleraine councillors had previously visited Waveney to view a project similar to what is planned for Rugby Avenue.
