Council reception is a real celebration of local hockey

A major celebration of hockey in the Cookstown district took place at the Burnavon on Friday when the Chairman of Cookstown District Council and the Chairman of Cookstown Twinning hosting a reception in honour of Cookstown Hockey Team and visiting teams for the Junior Celtic Cup.

Players, management and committee members of Cookstown Hockey Club joined the celebrations to acknowledge their achievement of retaining the Kirk Cup for a seconf consecutive year and outstandingly the Premier League for a third year in a row.

Chairman Councillor John McNamee said, “This is certainly one of the most successful periods within the club’s history and long may it last.

“Each of the players involved in the team played their part in bringing both these trophies back to Cookstown – your commitment and dedication is endless game after game.”

In recognition of their achievement Councillor John McNamee presented Ian Hughes, team captain for the Premier League Team and Andrew Barbour, team captain for the Kirk Cup team with an inscribed crystal presentation.

Council representatives were also delighted to be joined by representatives of the visiting teams participating in the Junior Celtic Cup, from France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

It was a recognised as a tremendous achievement for Cookstown Hockey Club to host this tournament and one which the Council and the Twinning Committee wished to acknowledge.

Chairman of the Twinning Committee Councillor James McGarvey welcomed the visiting teams and the Hockey Associations involved in the tournament.

Commenting on the tournament Councillor McGarvey stated, “the hosting of this tournament has been a major boost to the town and one which we hope can be developed on.

“I know a lot of work and organisation has gone into the success of this tournament including the support of tournament officials and the Hockey Associations.”

Councillor McGarvey presented key participants with a Council plaque and offered his good wishes to the Club for the remainder of the tournament.
