Council reiterates commitment in interim to three centres

CRAIGAVON Borough Council has reiterated its commitment to its existing three leisure complexes whilst the new super leisure centre is being progressed.

Council has approved an investment of up to 30 million to build a new super centre at the South Lake in Craigavon. It stressed the new centre will be able to accommodate all users including schools and clubs. According to the council’s public consultation with schools and clubs, 70 per cent were in favour of the new single leisure centre.

A spokesperson for council said: “As you would expect Council takes all health and safety aspects very seriously and in the new single leisure centre health and safety will not be compromised. Indeed it will give council the opportunity to enhance their already stringent health and safety regime.

“Council is also emphasising its commitment in the interim to the three existing leisure centres whose staff will continue to offer customers a high class service in the five years that it will take to design and build the new super centre. Council has set aside resources to ensure that these buildings remain open until the new super centre is built.

“Finally council had a very favourable meeting with all three local swimming clubs who made it very clear that a new super centre with a 50 metre pool has the support of those three clubs.”
