Council renews ‘cash for litter’ programme

A scheme which rewards members of the public for keeping the borough clean and tidy has been relaunched.

The ‘Doing the Right Thing’ initiative, run by Larne Borough Council, sees people who are identified putting litter into bins or picking up dog fouling entered into a draw for a cash prize.

The scheme was piloted last summer, with winners being selected in June, July and August, each receiving a £50 reward presented by the Mayor.

A review of the pilot programme found it to be highly successful, and the local authority has now reinstated the project.

A council spokesperson said the ‘Doing the Right Thing’ scheme was now being “actively embraced” by other local authorities, including Carrickfergus, Newtownabbey, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Moyle and Coleraine.

However, rewards are now to be handed out every quarter, rather than each month.

The first winner is due to be announced today (Thursday).
