Council reviews '˜rubbish' rules at new £750k recycling centre at Drumcoo

Mid Ulster District Council has reviewed arrangements at Drumcoo Recycling Centre following complaints from householders.

The £750,000 facility on the Coalisland Road re-opened just three weeks ago following a major re-development.

The plant had been closed for approximately 12 months.

But an angry caller to the Tyrone Times said staff working at the site refused to empty his wheelie bin just days after the new facility had opened, redirecting him to a waste facility at Coalisland instead.

This meant an extra round trip of approximately 10 miles.

But after being contacted by the Times, a council spokesperson said: “The council are in receipt of comments in relation to residents being unable to directly dispose of bin contents on site.

“Having taken on board the comments made by site users since its re-opening, the council has reviewed operations and proposes to install two bin lifters to facilitate the direct emptying of bin containers.

“In order to maximise the efforts of improved recycling, the council would encourage householders to separate their waste prior to arriving on site.”

The newly refurbished facility now allows for the recycling of blue bin materials - paper; card; tins and cans; foil trays; aerosols; glass bottles and jars; plastic bottles; plastic pots tubs and trays; cardboard; timber; hard plastics; scrap metal; rubble; plasterboard; flat glass; books; clothes and shoes; gas cylinders; oil filters; engine oil and cooking oil.

The council has confirmed that it remains possible to empty wheelie bins at the Coalisland facility.
