Council set to look again at Killeaton allotments

LISBURN Council is set to carry out a local consultation exercise in Derriaghy over controversial plans to build allotments on part of Killeaton Playing Fields.

The Council’s Corporate Services Committee has recommended the move after hearing from members of the ’Killeaton Field Save Open Spaces’ Group at its June meeting.

The group handed over a petition with 600 names opposing the plan to turn part of the playing fields into 39 allotments.

They stressed they did not oppose the idea of more allotments, but believed it was the wrong site and would take away one of the few remaining green spaces in the area.

Following the Corporate Committee meeting a council spokesperson said they had noted the concerns of the delegation and ‘fully debated the issues involved with the proposed allotments’.

“Recommendations from the Committee will be put to Full Council for approval at the end of June before any further action can be undertaken” they continued.

The committee is recommending that Council Officers conduct a local consultation exercise to determine the views of local residents about the scheme.

Officers will also review the current allotment waiting list to establish in which areas of the city those people live.

And they have also agreed council officers should look to see if any additional capacity can be created in existing allotments and if there are any alternative sites which could be utilised for allotments.

“If approval is received at the June Full Council Meeting it is expected that the Council Officers will report back to the Corporate Services Committee on these recommendations in due course” the spokesperson said.
