Council teams up with Asda to provide free activity sessions

FAMILIES in Newtownabbey will be able to take part in free activity sessions for children thanks to Newtownabbey Borough Council teaming up with Asda Sporting Chance.

With Sporting Chance, children have the option to participate in a wide range of different free activity sessions during each of the school holidays in 2010, covering the more traditional sports as well as more unusual activities children may never have tried before.

Some of the activities available with Newtownabbey Borough Council and Asda Sporting Chance include football camps, hockey weeks and multisport weeks.

Dean Holmes, Sport and Play Development Officer commented: “Newtownabbey Borough Council is delighted to be working in partnership with Asda to bring the sporting chance programme to Newtownabbey. This initiative will benefit families and fits in with our commitment to improving young people’s health in the area.”

Asda’s Head of the Community, Fiona Campbell-Reilly, added: “Asda is thrilled to be working with Newtownabbey Borough Council. Our Sporting Chance scheme offers families an affordable and enjoyable way to get active and gives children the chance to develop new skills they may previously have been unable to due to financial constraints.”

Asda is offering the sessions for free to allow children to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. A recent report by the British Heart Foundation found that only one in eight children are getting the recommended 60 minutes a day of daily physical activity. The Sporting Chance initiative is a simple way to help families address and improve their lifestyles and have fun at the same time.

Now in its third year, the Asda Sporting Chance initiative will provide more than 3 million free spaces across 50 different activities for children to enjoy in the holidays during 2010.
