Council to address ‘imbalance’ in areas

According to one Causeway Coast and Glens councillor some ratepayers of the borough are being treated as ‘second class citizens’.

Limavady Sinn Fein councillor Tony McCaul was speaking on the issue on inequality, after DUP Alderman John Finlay questioned why some areas of the borough had their streets cleaned once a month, whilst others were cleaned by the sweeper once a week.

Ald Finlay pointed out that there needed to be ‘fairness to all ratepayers’ in relation to the services that they received.

Cllr McCaul, speaking on the same issue, defended ratepayers in rural areas after it was revealed that Council will clear snow and ice from footpaths in urban areas, for Road Service in severe weather, and not in rural areas of the borough.

“We need some policy for rural areas, “ said the Sinn Fein man. “The snow is more severe in winter in rural areas, they are ratepayers too. I have spoken to one ratepayer who has said he feels like a second class citizen.”

Agreeing, Coleraine DUP councillor George Duddy, he said: “We need to nail these issues down. We are staring to loose people’s confidence, these are big issues to ratepayers, and we are bringing them up on a monthly basis.”

Chief Executive David Jackson said he would ‘take all the comments on board’.
