Council to fund community festivals

THE RECESSION won't affect community festivals in the borough as councillors have voted to make £14,000 available for a programme of events this year.

The decision was taken at last Tuesday’s meeting of Council’s Policy and Development Committee when members were asked whether they wanted to match funding from the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure to deliver a Community Festival Fund Small Grants Programme for 2010-2011.

It was explained that Xouncil had to pledge to match-fund the programme otherwise the money would not be made available from DCAL.

The total of 28,400 will be used to fund community festivals around the borough.

Last year the grant aid funded ten community festivals which approximately 49,000 people participated in.

There was broad agreement that, despite the need to be prudent given the financial climate and the impending debate on striking the local rates, there was still a great need for community festivals and the benefits associated.

It was agreed to approve the match funding from DCAL and that the Community Development Sub Group will assess and allocate the community festival applications on behalf of Coleraine Borough Council just as they did last year.
