Council to help rescue war memorial project

The project – which has been several years in the making – is being spearheaded by the village’s community association, who have identified 31 people from the village who died in the conflicts. The association has also raised over £6,000 and purchased a stone for the memorial from a firm in England.

However, the long-awaited project was in jeopardy after a local stonemason who had agreed to carry out the work as a favour to the community went out of business, leaving the group with the task of finding around £5,000 to complete the scheme.

But Larne Borough Council appears to have salvaged the project, after it agreed to a request for match-funding of up to £5,000 to help with the construction and erection of the memorial.

It is planned that the village green memorial will feature a plaque honouring the memories of seven members of the Hutchinson family who were killed in the Belfast Blitz and who were buried in Ballycarry.
