Council to review parking

Car parking prices and the administration of fixed penalty notices are to be reviewed by Causeway Coast and Glens Council.

On April 1, following the reorganisation of local councils, off street parking functions transferred from DRD to local councils. DRD have continued to deliver enforcement of parking fees and fines and administer fixed penalty notices.

At Tuesday’s meeting of Council’s Environmental Committee, it was agreed to enter into discussions with DRD with a view to continuing with elements of the arrangement.

Director of Environmental Services, Aidan McPeak, told members that there would be a review of how all car parks had performed in the period since April.

“Some exceeded expectations and some did not,” he said.

He also said that Council would be reviewing the “five hours for £1” arrangement in some car parks.

Cllr Russell Watton said that he agreed with the proposal - despite the fact that he had just recently “been caught out on Newmarket Street” with a parking ticket.

“So the system is definitely working” he joked.
