Council urges local people to find out about employment training programme

THE latest figures released by the Department of Finance and Personnel have revealed that over 3,000 people are currently claiming unemployment benefit in Lisburn.

Whilst this is a small drop since November, just 0.7%, it still represents some 4.2% of the working age population in the city.

Lisburn City Council are hoping to go some way to addressing the city’s employment levels by holding an information session next week for unemployed people in Lisburn who would like to find out more about the Hospitality and Retail Training for Employment (HARTE) programme.

The next round of the popular programme is scheduled to commence on January 30 and will run for three weeks. The information session will be held at the Premier Inn in Lisburn on Thursday January 24 from 10am until 12pm for anyone interested in the programme.

HARTE is jointly funded by Lisburn City Council, Belfast City Council and the European Social Fund; and is supported by the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL).

It is designed to provide long-term unemployed individuals with the opportunity to gain personal development and vocational training qualifications. These qualifications and skills will then enable them to access job opportunities in the hospitality, retail and related employment sectors.

Alderman Jim Dillon, Chairman of the Council’s Economic Development Committee, said: “It is a new year, so why not have a new start with the HARTE programme if you are long-term unemployed and live in the Lisburn area.

“This information session will provide you with further details on the programme and successful case studies.

“Those who attend will also be guaranteed an interview for a range of job roles within the Premier Inn Group, which has numerous establishments throughout Northern Ireland.”
