Councillor condemns fire at Lisnamuck School

SDLP Councillor has condemned a fire started at a disused school in Maghera.

The fire was started at Lisnamuck School at Five Mile Straight on Sunday 1 July.

“I am very shocked at the malicious damage caused to the school. The whole community is saddened and indeed angry to see the blackened remains of what was a special place especially to the past pupils in Lisnamuck,” Councillor Lagan said.

“It had been empty for a very long time yet no one interferred with it or damaged it in any way- such was the repect that local people had for it. This was a crime and someone has got to be held responsible.

“It is the earnest hope of the community that the perpetrators be brought to book for what they have done. I understand that there is a police investigation underway.”

Police believe the fire was started between 10pm and 10.30pm. Anyone who noticed any suspicious activity is asked to contact them on 0845 600 800.
