Councillor urges a little extra help for elderly

COUNCILLOR Brian Dornan has praised the Housing Executive’s work in supporting older people in the community but suggested some simple extra help could make a big difference to their lives.

During the Council’s monthly planning meeting after representatives of the Housing Executive gave a presentation, Mr Dornan raised the issue of how older people in supported housing schemes could be better supported.

He said: “Some quite simple services can make a great difference to older people. Residents of sheltered dwellings have told me that they dread having to change light bulbs in case they fall. More frail people have said that it would help a lot if their refuse was collected from their apartment and taken to the communal bin for them. Many older people worry about these things which could be quite easily resolved for them at little or no cost.”

The Housing Executive officers said that they would pass on these suggestions
