Councillors bid to save library in Carnlough

LARNE Borough Council has said it will lobby to retain library facilities in Carnlough.

The village branch is one of 10 which Libraries NI considers to be “no longer viable” and a proposal to close is the subject of a 12-week consultation period which started on Monday of this week.

Coast Road SDLP councillor Danny O’Connor alerted the local authority and chief executive Geraldine McGahey said officers would bring forward a draft response to the formal consultation.

Ald O’Connor asked if the council, as landlord of the building in which the library is located, could consult with Libraries NI about the rent charged and any improvements that might help to secure the future of the service.

Mrs McGahey said the lease had expired and could be “taken forward to encourage library facilities to be maintained in Carnlough”.
