Councillors cry foul over dog mess

No fixed penalties were issued for dog fouling in Mid and East Antrim during December despite concerns of local councillors.

Councillor Cheryl Johnston identified Carrickburn Road and Dromore Road as areas of concern.

She told a meeting of the council’s operational committee, which took place on Monday night, at Carrick Town Hall: “People are carrying bags but because there is no bin, people are throwing it on the ground.”

Councillor John Stewart also highlighted dog fouling at Marine Highway, Marine Gardens and Trailcock.

“It is the single biggest issue I get calls about it every day.”

“We need to send out a strong message to people about this. If that means someone standing in a hedge for 12 hours with a camera, then so be it, We need to name and shame people doing this.

“Let us get a strategy together and end this scourge.”

Philip Thompson, director of operations, reported a “spike” in dog fouling annually during January and February.

He said that his department would continue to look at the issue.
