Councillor's father is remembered

SDLP councillor Pat McDade has said he felt "humbled" by the support given to him by fellow councillors following the death of his father.

92-year-old John James McDade, better known as Jimmy, died last Tuesday (January 18) in Laganvale Nursing Home.

"He led a long and fruitful life, but the whole family are heartbroken," said Mr McDade.

"Everyone at the council has been wonderful in showing their support. I was particularly touched when the Mayor and Chief Executive of the council visited the family home.

"We got cards of condolences from the other councillors, and many of them attended the funeral. I'm very grateful for the support we were given. It's much appreciated."

The late Mr McDade is originally from Belfast, but left the city to escape the worst of the Troubles in the 1970s.

"The family moved here 40 years ago when the violence was really bad. For my father, the safety of his children was paramount."

Cllr McDade continued: "He was a keen sportsman in his youth. He was a runner and loved football. When he got a bit older he loved to attend different sporting events."

His party colleague, Dolores Kelly, expressed her condolences to the McDade family.

She said: "I wish Pat and his family all the best during this difficult time. Jimmy was a kind man who always put the needs of his children and grandchildren first."

Craigavon Mayor Stephen Moutray wished the family well at the Council's mid-monthly meeting on Monday evening.

He said: "On behalf of the Council, I would like to give my condolences to Councillor Pat McDade, whose father Jimmy sadly passed away recently. We wish him all the best."

Mr McDade was the husband of Mary and father of Pauline, George, Michael, Emmanuel, Breige, Pat, Martin and the late Jim.

He also had 25 grandchildren.

He was buried in Kilwarlin cemetery following Requiem Mass in St Coleman's Church.
