Councillors oppose listing of Johnston’s Demesne

They have instructed the Council to write a letter to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) stating that they object to the listing of the land.

However, they did not oppose the listing of Johnston’s House.

The move is part of a consultation by the NIEA.

It comes after property developer Dermott Farrell, who has plans to build on the land, contacted the Council.

In a letter to Chief Executive Theresa Donaldson, Mr Farrell said: “We feel a scheme of large family homes which is sympathetic to Demesne House and the surrounding grounds is to be welcomed as a positive improvement and enhancement of these lands.”

He went on: “It will increase surveillance and hopefully deter any anti-social behaviour which the site has been renowned for over the past number of years.”

Cllr Liam Mackle, who proposed the motion, pointed out that North Lurgan had one of the highest levels of housing need in the Borough.

However, he added: “North Lurgan needs social housing, not exclusive mansions.”

Cllr Mackle also said he was excited for the prospects of the golf club.
