Councillors oppose Planners over Ballycairn

MEMBERS of Coleraine Council's Planning Committee have voiced their opposition to plans to redevelop part of the town's Ballycairn area.

A meeting of Council's Planning Committee on Tuesday night heard that a plan by Prolusk Ltd to redevelop 17 and 19 Ballycairn Road had been approved by the Planning Department despite an objection.

The scheme will demolish the existing houses and replace them with three dwellings, driveways and amenity area.

An office meeting was held on January 8 to discuss the objection which claimed the building work would change the character of the Ballycairn area, would result in cramming and set a precedent for other applications.

Planning representative Paul Duffy told the meeting: "The application was re-assesed after the office meeting and we are satisfied that it meets Planning criteria and have issued an approval for the application."

Cllr Christine Alexander asked for it to be recorded that she did not support the Planning Department's approval. This was seconded by Alderman David McClarty.

When a vote was taken, 16 members of the committee voted to register their opposition to the approval.
