Councillors query Giant's Causeway 'snub'

MOYLE councillors have hit out at the National Trust after it did not appear the local authority was represented at a sod-cutting photo call to mark the new chapter surrounding the Giant's Causeway Visitors' Centre.

DUP councillor Robert McIlroy raised the matter at a meeting of Moyle Council and said he did not see the Council present and he asked if Moyle Council had received an invite.

“If we didn’t I would be most upset,” he said.

He said the National Trust should be made aware of the Council’s feelings on the matter because he said it was due to the Council and the ratepayers of Moyle that paved the way for the new developments at the Causeway.

Council Chairperson, Independent Price McConaghy, said there were photos of the sod-cutting in the press and he supplied them to the Council Chief Executive Richard Lewis.

Cllr McConaghy said if the event took place since he became Chairperson he said he certainly had not been invited and former Council Chairperson, Cllr Cara McShane (Sinn Fein), said she thought the sod-cutting event may have been at the start of July - which was after her term ended.

The Council agreed to write to the National Trust.
