Councillors tributes to Ald McClure

During Monday’s Full Council meeting, Ballymoney Mayor, Ald Bill Kennedy said: “It is with regret that I advise of the passing of Alderman William James McClure, a long serving member of our neighbouring Council, Coleraine. He also served a short period on this Council in 1987/88 when he was co-opted for the remainder of a term following the resignation of a member.

“James was elected to Coleraine Borough Council in 1977 and has served as mayor on a number of occasions. He was awarded an MBE in 2005 for services to local government. He also serviced on Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention and the Northern Ireland Assembly representing the East Londonderry Constituency.

“James was a loyal and conscientious Councillor. He took an active interest in the welfare of the local community and represented their needs and concerns to the Council. He will be sadly missed by his colleagues on Coleraine Borough Council and in this wider area. I convey condolences to the entire family circle.”

Reiterating the Mayor’s comments, Ald Frank Campbell continued: “I would like to be associated with that. I knew Ald McClure for a long time and worked with his brother in Ballymoney.

“I have a lot of respect for the family and would like to pass on my sympathies to them all.”

Cllr Alan McLean agreed with all the tributes adding: “He was a man of principle and distinction.”

Ald Cecil Cousley, who worked alongside Ald McClure, stated: “He didn’t live very far from me and I also had the pleasure of working with him. He was a good member and a hard worker. My sympathies go to his wife and entire family circle.”

Concluding Cllr Ian Stevenson said a few words adding: “He will be sadly missed by everyone.”
