Council's green fingers secure a silver award

The Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council put their green fingers into action and sowed the seed of a medal winning performance at the Allianz Garden Show Ireland.

Local Economic Development and Technical Services employees showcased local produce at Antrim Castle Gardens from 6th to 8th May and showed they’re up there with the best, claiming silver for their Food Heartland themed garden in the ‘Best of NI Local Produce Garden’ category.

They designed and built a show-stopping plot that featured two of the borough’s world renowned Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products, Lough Neagh Eels and the Armagh Bramley Apples.

They competed in the special “Best of Northern Ireland” area, joining a few other local authorities who all created a showcase garden or horticultural display to embrace Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink.

The locals’ picturesque garden also included themes of recycling, with water features constructed using recycled dumped tyres, sustainability, local food production and stunning landscapes, reflecting the ethos of the borough.

Lord Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon, Councillor Daryn Causby said: “We are delighted to secure this brilliant award.

“Council officers worked extremely hard to develop a beautiful garden encompassing the world class local produce on offer throughout the area.

“It was the perfect opportunity to showcase all we have to offer as the Food Heartland of NI to the thousands of visitors to the show – well done to all involved.”
