Councilurgeseveryone to get ready for digital TV switchover

LISBURN City Council’s Corporate Services Committee has been given an update on the digital TV switchover for the UK, which will take effect in Northern Ireland this October.

Existing television sets need to be ready for the UK-wide switchover and most televisions can be converted to enable viewing with a digital set-top box.

Another option is to install Sky, cable or broadband or to purchase a new television with digital built-in.

There is a Switchover Help Scheme to provide assistance to people who need advice and anyone with queries can telephone 08456 50 50 50 for advice. You can also log onto www.digitaluk.co.uk and see a number of frequently asked questions and answers under the “help” choice.

The Chairman of the Committee, Councillor Stephen Martin, said: “While this area is not directly related to the operations of the Council, because we know that people have questions and queries surrounding the digital switchover we wanted to communicate that help and advice is out there.

“Like everything else when you know what you are dealing with things are easier to manage and I would advise anybody with questions to check out the Digital UK website or telephone the organisation directly with regard to the October switch-over.

“Similarly if you know someone, a neighbour, an elderly person who perhaps isn’t very familiar with the change and who may be anxious about what it means, please mention the phone number to them, on which they or you can get advice, as the process is not a complicated one in most cases,” he concluded.
