Count centre device was viable

POLICE have confirmed that an explosive device left outside Londonderry's election count centre was viable.

The Foyle and East Londonderry counts were suspended for 90 minutes at Templemore Sports Complex after a car was abandoned.

The PSNI said a taxi driver's car was hijacked, a gun held to his head and he was told to bring a pipe bomb to the count.

The Army carried out a comtrolled explosion at about midnight.

Some local residents were evacuated from their homes and were sheltered in a local community centre.
