Courses tohelp peoplein NW be less hateful

Derry City and Strabane District Council is calling on community and youth workers, volunteers, facilitators, statutory workers and individuals to avail of the opportunity to avail of free training courses this September.

The courses are being organised as part of Community Relations and Cultural Awareness Week from September 26 to October 4 by the Good Relations Team from Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Among the courses on offer are courses on ‘Introduction to Mediation’; Facilitating peace building; ‘Dealing with the past’; ‘Migration Awareness’ and ‘Ending Hate’ seminars and Intercultural Arts Training.

Mayor Councillor Elisha McCallion said: “The courses are a great initiative to help participants understand local diversity not only in terms of ethnicity but also in terms of working to promote peaceful approaches to resolving differences of opinion or controversial issues in our communities. “They are really useful to anyone working or volunteering in local communities and can be useful skills for self-employment or employment in facilitation or community work. Council is delighted to be able to offer the courses free of charge under our Good Relations Strategy.”

The Introduction to Mediation Course is scheduled to take place on Monday 28 September from 9.30 am to 4.30pm at the Shared Future Centre while the Peace Builders Workbook workshop will take place at the Strabane office of Derry City and Strabane District Council on September 29 from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

The Shared Future Centre will be the venue for the Dealing with the Past Workshop on Wednesday, September 30, (9.30am to 1.30pm), the Migration Awareness and Ending Hate seminars on October 01 from 9.30am to 4.30pm and Intercultural Arts Training on 01 October (10am to 4pm).

Advance registration is essential for any of the courses, all of which include light lunch and a certificate of attendance. No prior knowledge is required for any course.
