Court hears Cannabis was for personal use

A 35-year-old Banbridge man caught with a six gram piece of cannabis resin in his coat pocket, had the drug for personal use, last week's Magistrates Court heard.

William Fitzpatrick, an unemployed father of four, was fined 100 by District Judge Mr Paul Copeland.

The drugs were found when police searched Fitzpatrick on 10 November at 8.20pm at Peggy's Loaning, Banbridge.

He made a full and frank admission to police and stated it was for his own personal use.

A solicitor said his client had a long standing problem with depression and he handed in a medical report from Fitzpatrick's GP.

However Mr Copeland remarked,"Cannabis will not do him much good."

The solicitor said the drugs had a street value of around 20 and his client had it "to experiment" adding that he "regretted what he did."
