Timothy Beggs, of Sloanhill Court, Lurgan, is accused of causing unnecessary suffering to animals on August 7 this year.

He faces a further charge of abandoning an animal for which he was responsible on the same date.

A member of court staff told the defendant to take his hands out of his pockets. The two charges were read out to Beggs and when asked if he understood the charges, the defendant said: “Yes.”

A PSNI officer told the court she was aware of the facts and circumstances of the case and believes she can connect the defendant to the charges.

A barrister for the accused said he had no questions for the police officer in relation to the connection.

A Prosecutor asked for a four week adjournment for an update. The case was adjourned until October 7 this year.

Beggs is the subject of one court bail condition which is not to have care of or own any animals even on a temporary basis.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan said: “Breach your court bail and you are in significant trouble.” He was released on £300 bail.

Beggs’s barrister asked if he could help his client sign his bail as the defendant "has mental health difficulties and is very concerned about going into the cells”.

The request was granted and Legal Aid was granted.
