'It's lucky we're not dealing with another death on our roads' say Mid Ulster police after van crashes into ditch

Police in Mid Ulster say it’s fortunate another person wasn’t killed on the roads after a van ended up in a ditch on Saturday night.

"It wasn't even 9pm before Mid Ulster police crews were dealing with their first suspected drink driver of the night,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

"A white van left the road and ended up in a ditch. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

"We’re lucky not to be dealing with another death on our roads this evening.

"Let this be a cautionary tale for anyone considering taking a similar risk. Drink driving puts your life at risk and the lives of everyone else on the road.”

The spokesperson stressed protecting road users is “a priority” for Mid Ulster police.

"There is zero tolerance for driving under the influence of drugs or excess alcohol.

"If you're planning on drinking, please make sure you have suitable arrangements in place to get home safely.”

Mid Ulster police said they would continue patrolling local roads, including rural locations, to ensure public safety.
