Jail term for sex offender who breached Court Order

A Co Antrim man who breached a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) has received a one month jail term.

The 38-year-old breached the Order on July 22 this year by failing to reside at an address approved by court.

Richard Smyth, of Ballyutoag Road, Nutts Corner, Crumlin also failed to notify police he had "changed" address.

He appeared at Ballymena Magistrates' Court on Thursday via video link from prison.

The court was told the SOPO was put in place in 2025.

At court last year the defendant admitted attempting to make a 'sexual communication' with a child and as well as a jail term he had been put on the sex offenders' register and was made the subject of a SOPO for five years.

At Thursday's court, a defence barrister said the defendant has been on remand in custody on "driving matters" for which he is due to be sentenced next week at the Crown Court.

Regarding the SOPO breach, the barrister said Smyth had been "living between different addresses" and had been "struggling to stabilise himself".

He said the defendant's criminal record was connected to cocaine use.
