It follows reports of visitors travelling to the Co Antrim beauty spot last weekend in contravention of Covid-19 response restrictions.

Speaking on Monday, East Antrim DUP MLA David Hilditch said he had received a number of complaints of people flouting the advice.

He said: “People are concerned about others from outside the area coming into the village at this time. It remains an issue.”

Responding to the concern, the National Trust pointed to measures in place to deter visitors during the emergency.

A spokesperson for the conservation charity said: “It is physically difficult, and in some cases almost impossible to close access to our coast and countryside places. The car park at Glenoe does not have a gate which can be closed to prevent cars accessing.

“We have however put up closed signs at Glenoe and a number of other sites. These signs were erected as a reminder to visitors coming from further afield that our places are closed for normal visiting as per government guidance.

“We are encouraging everyone to stay at home, and not to travel at all.”
