CowParade is on the moove

The CowParade has brought smiles and enjoyment to school children and local communities across the Carrickfergus, Antrim and Newtownabbey areas in the past few weeks and now the CAN Cows are on the moo-ve so more people can enjoy them.

The CAN Peace III Partnership is the implementing body for the PEACE III Programme in the Carrickfergus, Antrim and Newtownabbey areas, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The CAN Peace III Partnership are taking part in CowParade NI to help build positive relations across the CAN (Carrickfergus, Antrim, Newtownabbey) area through a series of ‘udderly’ unique arts projects for young people. The theme of ‘Mooving Forward Together’ focuses on the cross community and shared space themes that the CAN Peace III Partnership promotes.

Check out the CAN Cow Trail map and go on a bit of a trip to see where all the cows have mooved to. Download the map by visiting: www.canpeace3.org, follow the trail and enter the competition before September 28 to win tickets to Mr Hullabaloo’s pantomime - Aladdin - at the Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl. On the website, you will also be able to ‘Vote for your Favourite Moo’ so you can help decide which of the large cows will be kept locally after the Cow Parade finishes.

Speaking about the trail, Sam Crowe, Chair of the CAN Peace III Partnership commented: “Over the last month, artists and facilitators have worked with 16 schools and two Young Farmers’ groups in the CAN area on a workshop programme to design and decorate the cows, while at the same time exploring themes relevant to the Peace programme such as positive relations, identity, diversity and shared space. It is great that even more people will be able to enjoy the fantastic artwork that the young people have created. We have amazing talent locally and the CowParade has helped demonstrate this.

“The colourful Fresians include ‘Miss Glen’, a mosaic cow designed and decorated by pupils from Ashgrove Primary School and Glengormley Integrated Primary School with artist Angela Ginn. Angela also worked with pupils from Ballyclare and Tir-na-Nog Primary Schools to design a unique patchwork blanket for their cow ‘Clare’, while artist Janet Crymble created eco-themed cow ‘MonMOOMental’ and kaleidoscopic calf size Mini Moo ‘Patches’ with pupils from six Carrickfergus primary schools - The Model, St Nicholas’, Acorn Integrated, Woodburn, Sunnylands and Whitehead.

More Mini Moos were also designed and decorated by pupils from Ballynure and Straid primary schools - namely ‘Misty’, and Doagh and Kilbride Primary Schools - ‘Footsteps’, each reflecting the key themes of peace and partnership. As part of the process, the children have also participated in creative workshops with facilitators Nuala Devenney and Joe Walsh from NICHS to explore themes of friendship, identity and shared space.”

The CowParade NI Presenting Partners are Belfast City Council, Derry City Council and ILEX. The charity partners who will benefit from the charity auction of cows in November are Depaul Ireland and Barnardo’s NI.
