Mr Craig, who lost his seat at the recent Assembly elections, was co-opted back onto the council to fill the position vacated by Jenny Palmer, who secured a seat at Stormont last month.

Mr Craig, who has served on Lisburn City Council before becoming an MLA, said he was “delighted” to be back working as a councillor again and was looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.

“It all happened very quickly,” said Mr Craig, who attended his first council meeting on Tuesday evening (May 31).

“I am absolutely delighted to be back where I was first elected.

“This means that I can continue to represent the people of Lisburn North, thousands of whom had put their trust in me by voting for me.

“It also means that I will be able to carry on some of the work that I had started as an MLA.”

Mr Craig said one major issue for him was the state of the ground at the front of the shops on the Moss Road.

“I feel for the business owners and residents who have had to put up with it,” he said.

“The land in question, which is in a bad state of repair, belongs to the council and it is up to the council to get it sorted out.

“I am now in the perfect position to drive things forward.”
