This was the result of the findings of the Public Health Agency’s survey on attitudes amongst the public towards organ donation.

The survey showed that people living in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust area are most knowledgeable about and favourable towards organ donation.

The Upper Bann MLA, who is currently progressing a Private Members Bill at Stormont to move to a new ‘soft opt-out’ system of organ donation, said: “I’m heartened to see the findings of this survey supporting the aim of my Private Members’ Bill and am really looking forward to continuing to work alongside the Public Health Agency as my Bill progresses through Stormont.

“It is crucial that we find a way to bridge the gap between 90 per cent support for organ donation and only 30 per cent signing up to current Organ Donor Register.”

The findings will be presented to the health committee.
