Craigavon pupils learn of social networking dangers

Ten local schools recently took part in an art competition to raise awareness of the dangers and potential consequences for young people who use social networking sites.

Social networking and the associated potential dangers has been identified as a priority within Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) Action Plan 2015-2016 – and this calendar is just one of a number of events that have been organised to educate young people, parents and carers on the dos and don’ts of social media.

Young people designed posters based on a variety of themes including tips to keep safe, the dangers of giving out personal information online, cyber bullying, intimidation and harassment, consequences of sharing pictures or videos, online predators and where to get help.

Pupils from year seven entered the competition and all artwork showed an excellent understanding of the possible dangers of the internet. As well as the winning posters being printed in the calendar, it also features helpful tips and vital information for parents and carers to help keep young people safe while online.

“We were delighted with the response to this competition as we all know that social networking is now one of the main forms of communication for young people,” commented Alderman Robert Smith.

“We are committed to increasing awareness of the dangers of social networking and reducing internet abuse within the Borough and will continue to implement initiatives like this. It was heartening to see so many schools get involved and to see the understanding that young people have regarding online issues.”
