Creative hub will open 10 months late

A NEW creative industries hub planned for Londonderry’s Ebrington square will open almost a year later than originally projected, the Sentinel can reveal.

Under the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister’s (OFMDFM) Departmental plan for 2012/13 the opening of the hub was pencilled in for March 2013.

But it has now emerged that it won’t be ready this month and that the buildings in which it is to be housed will be needed to host the Turner Prize first.

Once the acclaimed modern art competition and exhibition is over - in January 2014 - it’s all clear for the creative industries hub.

SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood asked the First Minister and Deputy First Minister whether the Creative Industries Hub would be in place by March 2013.

They jointly replied: “Work is underway to convert former military accommodation, buildings 80/81, to house the Creative Digital Industries Hub on the Ebrington site.

“In advance of housing the Creative Digital Industries Hub, these buildings will be used to host the internationally renowned Turner Prize as part of the 2013 UK City of Culture programme.

“The 2013 Turner Prize will be in place from October 2013 until January 2014.”
