Crime Unit probes tyre dumping near Ballyclare

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency’s Environmental Crime Unit has confirmed that it is investigating the dumping of tyres on land at Hillhead Road near Ballyclare.

At the council’s February Environment Committee meeting, Cllr Jim Bingham and Cllr Mandy Girvan questioned NIEA representatives about the illegal dumping.

Cllr Bingham said that the matter had been reported to the department in November.

“The tyres are still lying there and nothing has been done about it,” the UUP man commented.

An official from the Environmental Crime Unit disagreed that nothing has been done, but stressed that the unit doesn’t have the resources to remove the tyres.

She later informed Cllr Girvan that they are “fully aware of the incident” and that “it is currently being investigated.”
