18 years for Hazel

HAZEL Stewart will spend 18 years behind bars before she is eligible to be considered for parole.

That was the sentence handed down to the double murderess at Laganside Court this morning (Wednesday) by Mr Justice Anthony Hart.

He said that the jury had accepted Stewart’s part in the murders by their guilty verdict.

He said that 48-year-old Stewart’s “culpability was exceptionally high” in the plan to kill her husband Trevor Buchanan and Lesley Howell, the wife of her former lover, Colin Howell.

Howell, who pleaded guilty to the two murders in 1991, was sentenced to 21 years in jail.
