200 crimes a month in Limavady

Around 200 crimes a month were recorded by the PSNI in Limavady over the course of the past year, the Sentinel can reveal.

An analysis of the publicly available ‘crime map’ published by police forces across the UK shows that in the Limavady town area, there were 1,625 crimes recorded in the past year. The figures cover the period from December 2013 to November 2014.

In the outlying rural areas, including Greysteel, Ballykelly, Dungiven, Magilligan and other towns and villages, there were 867 crimes recorded.

Anti-social behaviour accounted for the largest number of crimes recorded by the PSNI in Limavady town, with 626 instances throughout the past year. Crimes of that type peaked during the month of July with 75 instances recorded in the town.

During the colder winter months of November, December, January and February, reports of anti-social behaviour tailed off, reaching a low of 30 instances during the month of January.

The figures for the rural areas surrounding Limavady town paint a similar picture with anti-social behaviour crimes also reaching a peak in July and lows during the winter.

In terms of burglaries, of which there were a total of 58 recorded in Limavady town during the year, there was some degree of variation from month-to-month with the highest figure of eight burglaries recorded in March.

In the rural area, there were 42 burglaries in the past year.

The figures for criminal damage and arson are listed together, with a total of 244 in the town and 218 for the rural area. The month of August saw crimes of that type peak in Limavady town with 33 recorded by police in Limavady town while the lowest figure was recorded in June with a figure of 11.

No fewer than 378 violent or sexual offences were recorded in Limavady town during the past year, according to the figures from the PSNI. Violent or sexual crimes in Limavady peaked during the month of March with a shocking 48 crimes of that type. The figures for Limavady town also show that there were 129 thefts, seven public order offences, 75 drug offences, and 47 shoplifting crimes.
