Alleged taunt in ‘appallingly bad taste’

A LURGAN man allegedly taunted police officers about a murdered colleague and told them: “I can’t wait until you get blown up”, the High Court has heard.

Craig Gibson is accused of drunkenly screaming abuse in what prosecutors called the worst disorderly behaviour imaginable.

But a barrister for the 21-year-old called it an attempt at being funny in “appallingly bad taste”.

Gibson, of Carrigart, Tullygally, Craigavon, faces charges of disorderly behaviour and assault on police. He was arrested after police on patrol in Donaghcloney on June 26 spotted him staggering on the road, slurring his words.

It was claimed that he launched a sustained tirade of abuse at officers, and shouted “Up the hoods”.

Conor O’Kane, prosecuting, said Gibson continued: “Stevie Carroll got one in the head and you can do f*** all about it.”

Constable Carroll (48), was shot dead in Craigavon in March 2009.

The assault charge relates to a claim that he raised his hand in an officer’s face. The defence barrister claimed the comments were a drunken attempt at humour.

The barrister added that Gibson claimed to have no recollection of the incident.

Bail was refused.
