The video, which has since been removed from social media site Facebook, was this morning brought to the attention of the Sentinel by a concerned reader.

One facebook user described the video’s shocking contents: “It showed you someone squeezing the poor pup’s throat and then throwing it onto the ground before stepping on top of the poor animal.”

Another said: “Be glad you didn’t watch it!

“I had to turn off the sound first, then stop the video after about three seconds.”

Sergeant Ian Hunt, speaking on behalf of Limavady Neighbourhood Police, said: “A video has been doing the rounds on Facebook in the Limavady area in relation to an incident of animal cruelty.

“This is a video of an incident that happened in December and was reported to police at the time.

“We would like to assure everyone that the matter is being dealt with by the relevant authorities.”
