Officers attended the incident at Cypress Place in the town on Sunday night.

A report was received at approximately 10pm that a man had sustained gunshot wounds to his leg.

He has been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Inspector Beverlie Reid said: “I would appeal to anyone with any information which could assist police with their enquiries to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 2045 26/07/20.

"Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Commenting on the incident, East Antrim MLA John Stewart said he was concerned to hear of a “barbaric punishment style-attack”.

“This law of the jungle mentality has absolutely no place in a civilised society; sadly yet again, the good name of our great town is back in the media for all the wrong reasons because of lawless criminals,” he added.

“The people responsible for these attacks must been taken off our streets and I would appeal to anyone with any information to contact the PSNI or Crimestoppers.”

Mid and East Antrim Deputy Mayor Cllr Andrew Wilson, who serves on the local Policing and Community Safety Partnership said: “Thank you to the emergency services for their swift response to attend the scene and treat the injured man.”
