Armed man threatened to kill dad

A man admitted making a telephone call to police, threatening to kill his father, while armed with a knife, Londonderry Magistrates’ Court has been told.

Barry Alan Joseph Porter (29), of Elaghmore Park, pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill and possessing an offensive weapon on June 14.

The prosecution said Porter made a ‘999’ call, claiming he was at his home address armed with a knife and was going to end his father’s life, saying he was unwell anyway and was going to harm himself.

Police tasked to the scene found Porter sitting in the living room with a large handled kitchen knife. Beer cans were strewn around the room and Porter raised the knife towards his throat from time to time.

Police initiated a firearm incident procedure and requested specialist assistance and managed to get Porter’s father out of the property to safety.

Porter eventually passed the knife to police through a living room window and was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.

During police interview, Porter claimed it was a moment of stupidity after consuming a large amount of alcohol over a number of days. He denied posing any real danger to his father.

Porter’s father was not aware of the threat until he was contacted by police and brought out of the house.

Deputy District Judge Chris Holmes adjourned sentencing for a Probation Pre-sentence Report, saying it was a serious case.

He warned Porter to work with Probation and released him on continuing bail to the court sitting on November 6.
