Arson warning

Police in Londonderry are warning those responsible for deliberately starting fires in the wooded area behind Glendale Gardens of the risks of their actions.

Within the past week Fire Service personnel have been called to the area three times to deal with fires that are getting closer to nearby properties.

The threat to homes and the residents living there is very real and the consequences of tying up crucial resources that might be needed elsewhere should also not be underestimated.

A police spokesperson said, “Anyone identified as being involved in setting fires that result in damage to property or injury to people will face extremely serious charges in a court of law.

“We are investigating these three recent incidents but are asking those responsible for setting the fires to desist immediately before the situation gets out of hand. Anyone who has noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information should contact police at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000.”
