Assaulted family friend at wedding

A man who assaulted a family friend at his son’s wedding was spared jail when he came before Londonderry Crown Court, because he recently had a heart attack.

Crown Court Judge Philip Babington told William Anthony Moore (53) of Peters Road, Dungiven: “If not for the heart attack I would have imposed 18 months but because of your medical position I am going to suspend that for 18 months.”

Moore pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm on November 18, 2012.

The court heard the injured party sustained a fractured jaw in the assault and had to undergo a surgical procedure to have metal plates inserted.

The injured party, the defendant and his family were friends for more than 20 years.

He had been invited to Moore’s son’s wedding party at the Rising Sun, Greysteel and went there with members of the Moore family.

A fracas broke out involving members of the family and Moore’s wife was knocked over.

The injured party went to help her before removing himself from the ongoing incident.

A short time later, the court heard, Moore approached the man and delivered two heavy blows on both sides of the injured party’s jaw.

Moore denied the offences.

Passing sentence, Judge Babington also ordered Moore to pay £1,500 compensation to the victim.
