Attempted bomb attack condemned

DUP Alderman Gary Middleton has condemned the attempted bomb attack on Strand Road PSNI Station at 12pm today, Wednesday.

Earlier it was reported that two masked men hijacked a lorry in Galliagh, into which they loaded an object, and ordered the driver to take it to the station.

Police received a report at 12.30pm that the lorry had been hijacked as the driver was making a delivery to Ederowen Park and they revealed that the lorry was stopped at Buncrana Road.

Due to the nature of the incident St Columb’s College and businesses at Springtown Industrial Estate were evacuated.

Condemning the incident, Mr Middleton said: “I totally condemn those who have once again put individuals lives at risk through their shameful acts of terrorism. Londonderry in recent years has been leading by example and has proven to the world that it’s a great place to live and work in. Our city has shown that we are open for business and that we take pride in what we have to offer the thousands of tourists who come and enjoy our attractions and hospitality.”

He added: “These terrorist acts will not deter us from an even brighter future. Their actions have achieved nothing other than causing disruption among our communities. I would like to commend the bravery of the lorry driver and my thoughts are with him at this time. I commend the PSNI for their quick response and encourage anyone with information to contact them directly.”
